The Beautiful Brain

Santiago Ramón y Cajal, médico y patólogo español, ganó el premio Nobel en 1906 por ser el primero en postular la neurona como unidad básica del sistema nervioso, basado en sus observaciones y tinciones de tejido cerebral. Compartió el premio con Camilo Golgi, quien diseñó la tinción con la que Cajal pintaba las neuronas observadas, y la recepción del premio fue un intenso debate, pues Golgi consideraba aún que el tejido nervioso era una red continua, sin células unitarias identificables.

En 1894, Cajal escribió: "La corteza cerebral semeja un jardín poblado de innumerables árboles, las células piramidales, que gracias a un cultivo inteligente pueden multiplicar sus ramas, hundir más lejos sus raíces y producir flores y frutos cada día más exquisitos"

Ramón y Cajal, además de ser un médico y científico ejemplar, tenía grandes dotes artísticas y verbales.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Spanish physician and pathologist, won the Nobel Prize in 1906 for being the first to postulate the neuron as the basic unit of the nervous system, based on his observations and staining of brain tissue. He shared the prize with Camilo Golgi, who invented the histological staning with which Cajal painted the observed neurons . The reception of the prize was an intense debate, because Golgi still considered that the nervous tissue was a continuous network, without identifiable unitary cells.

In 1894, Cajal wrote: “The cerebral cortex is similar to a garden filled with innumerable trees, the pyramidal cells, that can multiply their branches thanks to an intelligent cultivation, sending their roots deeper and producing more exquisite flowers and fruits every day.” 
Ramón y Cajal, besides being an exemplary physician and scientist, had great artistic and verbal skills.
